I wish I had said the following words rather than famous actress Mehgan Markle:
“Life is a camera…
Focus on what’s important, develop from the negatives, always try to capture the good times and if things don’t turn out, you can always take another shot.”
Well, sometimes like when the bird has flown away, you can’t take another shot but….
I take pictures mainly for my own enjoyment. The moods and impressions relate to my own and if they evoke an emotion in another viewer, I consider that a delight.
I aim to capture a moment in time that I find interesting. I’m not driven to make grand statements on the human condition or other such lofty concepts. If it looks interesting, I shoot. Interesting maybe anything from a pretty flower to old trucks rusting away to a beautiful sunrise.
As for photo manipulation, the extent of alteration in my photos is generally minimal but sometimes I want to push things a bit or maybe quite a bit. It kind of depends.
My photography habit has been festering since my first camera, a Brownie Hawkeye when I was just a kid. Since then, I’ve had my share of 35mm film camera’s but didn’t really go deep. I managed to process a couple of rolls of Ektachrome and Tri-X. The digital age and retirement ignited my present photo interest.
But I think, my main motivation is my love of landscape. I can thank my wife Jane (www.janeorrart.com) for that since she is a painter of landscapes. Our frequent outings into the countryside bring us inspiration. As well, I would photograph scenes as references for her paintings. This got me looking more deeply at what is around us. I also feel that my visual senses have been stimulated by my years in the film and television industry as an audio specialist. The many hours spent watching the work of great cinematographers has imprinted my brain with a vast collection of visual cues.
Of course, these days 90% of folk out there are photographers in one form or other, but it doesn’t bother me to be one of them. As I said at the beginning, I take pictures for my own enjoyment.
